The Geoffrey Heywood Prize was established in 2015 from a bequest left in Geoffrey Heywood鈥檚 will.
Geoffrey Heywood was President of the Institute from 1972 to 1974 and was the first consulting actuary to hold this post.
This is a prize for a paper or journal article that demonstrates excellent levels of communication and engagement with a general actuarial audience. Nominations are run in parallel with the Peter Clark Prize.
The 2025 Geoffrey Heywood Prize has been awarded to Zhan Liang Chan, Niharika Anthwal and Xin Yung Lee for their British Actuarial Journal paper; .
The paper explores the growing role of embedded insurance as a distribution channel and introduces a needs-based recommendation framework designed to align insurance products with individual customer needs better. Moving beyond traditional recommendation approaches, the research demonstrates how data-driven methods can support more relevant, accessible and timely insurance solutions within digital ecosystems.
On receiving the award, Zhan Liang Chan said: 鈥淲e are honoured to be recognised by the IFoA for this paper, which explores embedded insurance as a rapidly growing distribution channel. Traditional recommendation systems often fall short in an insurance context, as customers rarely search for or rate insurance products in the same way as other goods. By focusing on individual needs rather than user-generated behaviour, our work provides a framework to improve product relevance, increase accessibility, and help narrow the global protection gap.鈥
A Highly Commended award was given to Angus S. Macdonald and Stephen J. Richards for their paper; .
